Being a novice gardener, I have recently begun accessing items online (UK). I found an amazing site for seeds - Capital Gardens - who, with free delivery, sell branded seeds at half price. Thank you. moreResolved Question: how can i get rid of weeds in my garden so i can seed it afterwards?

There's a baby blackbird that has somehow ended up in our back garden and now sheltering in our garage at the rear of our house. He can hop around but doesn't seem to be able to fly. I have got some bird seed and cherries chopped up. Tried to feed him a chopped cherry on the end of my plyers where he was sitting. He opened his beak a couple of times but didn't seem interested then hoped down the side of the garage and hid under some other junk. I'm gonna leave the chopped cherries and bird seed on a dish for him and also leave a small plant drainer of water for it to wash in and small dish of fresh water to drink. Am also in the process of chopping up earth worms for it to eat. I'm not the biggest fan in the world of birds but is there owt else I can do for it? I think it's chance of survival is probably only 30 or 40% at the maximum. I think a blackbird has been to visit it once or twice to check up on it. Not sure whether it brought owt for it to eat or where its nest is supposed to be? In a tree or on the ground? When they open their beaks are you suposed to thrust the food down their throats? Not being a blackbird myself I don't know? Have looked at a resolved question on here and it seemed that vets aren't interested.Suzi, It is a double garage. We have left the doors wide open so it can get in and out whenever it wants. It is hoping around and cr&ping everywhere so I think it is able to fend for itself. Sophie/Cash - thanks for the tip! Our garden has bird feeders and lots of water and places to hide anyway. There is bread out in the garden so I will also get some dog bisuits and leave them out after soaking too. Hopefully it should be alright. We do have quite a few cats around here though and the odd fox.Baby blackbird is still alive. I have called him Dexter, Dexter Blackbird. I don't know where I got that from but it just came into my head. I believe that the mother has been visiting and must have been feeding it as it has been moving around the garage and cr&pping everywhere. It does have its favourite spot though and it looks pretty well camoflaged there. I have bought some dog biscuits and soaked them in milk. They are just over an inch long though, and half inch wide and bone shaped. I think perhaps I need to bash these into smaller crumbs first? moreResolved Question: Why are there tiny black flies and ants all over the stems of my sunflowers?

Today was an eye opening day. My new boyfriends parents live in his house. He is doing work on a new room for himself, somewhere private. The house was in a bit of a mess well what do you expect when a new bathroom is being fitted, so big holes have to be dug for pipes etc. She knew this. Anyway it all came to head today. We had gone out to get thje tiles for the room only to come back to a huge fight yes nice. She asked me why I had a smerk on my face ( I was just thinking it was like my family when they fight petty) I sat outside to get away from her waiting for my boyfriend. She then came out and shouted at me to get off her bench. I walked off, I don't have to put up with crap from no one less someone I hardly know. Anyway we went off out again. On our return I left my boyfriend in his new room and ran up stairs to get away from her, I saw her coming on the phone. One I got into my other halfs bedroom she came pounding in slamming the door against a chair. She took a mirror off the wall saying "I am taking my mirror I wouldn't want you to break it by looking in it" I said "Fine" As she left she hit me on the are with the mirror. Then she ran back in saysing about my boyfirends ex he had in the room before me and how I wanted to put too old people on the street. Then she said is that why your man is dead. A really silly question I know, but it's bugging me! I live in a main UK city and have a small wood at the back of where I live. There are 2 trees there which I can't see close up (there is a high fence separating us from the wood) but these trees give out tons of white fluffy stuff..not sure whether this is classed as pollen or seed heads. there is so much of it flying around that it looks like my garden is covered by a white fluffy carpet and it gets everywhere in the house. It actually looks like a snowstorm! From a distance the tree looks like it is covered in bunches of cotton wool..it is very tall, about 40 feet. Any ideas what it could be? Thanks moreResolved Question: can i grow fruit using mud?

I sowed lots of carrot seeds in 20 litre containers (they have as wide diameter as are garden trugs). There are far too many growing now (like a carrot carpet) and I need to thin them out but don't want to take out too many or leave too many in. How many should I leave in? (so I can decide which to keep) I'd really appreciate some help as need to do it this weekend to get them off to a good start now that the sun is here. Many thanks moreResolved Question: Just found/rescued a baby blackbird. Help please?
Heya, I was just taking a walk and I noticed a cat playing around with something on the floor, I went over and I saw a poor baby bird. So I picked it up, it cried a little, and I honestly couldn't see where his nest was, and I think he's got a slight injury to his wing. Well anyway, I bought him home and I filled a basket with straw and have a tiny pot of water in there and a few seeds. I have covered the top of the basket with a large heavy book, but there are still 2 small gaps at either side of the basket to let air/light in (but not big enough for him to get out). I could just hold him cupped in my 2 hands, and he looks quite similar to this, except his beak seems a little bigger : http://www.artbyelaine.co.uk/mediac/400_0/media/DIR_64021/Baby~Blackbird.jpg So i'm pretty sure it's a baby blackbird. Well anyway, does anyone have any advice for me on how to look after this little fella? Also, there's a family of blackbirds living in the connifers on my garden and I wondered if they would take in/accept another baby blackbird? These may sound like stupid questions, but I really do not know an awful lot about birds, and I couldn't stand there and watch the poor fella die. Oh, and it is 23:40pm in the UK so i'm pretty sure there's no where I can take him. Thanks in advance (: .xThanks for the answers! I've had him for about 3 hours, and he seems ok. His basket is next to my window, and i've opened the window slightly so he can have a little fresh air. I think if he makes it through the night, i'll have to take him to the nearest wildlife place I can.Oh, and it's 00:01am here in the UK, and I only live in a little town. There's no place I can ring right now :/ But as I mentioned, I'll see if he makes it through the night (:Ok, I think in the early hours of the morning, i'll take him back to the spot I found him, and wait to see if I see any Blackbirds around. If so, i'll have to sit quite close by, and place him somewhere safe. If she doesn't do anything, i'll have to take action then (:.'RSOUL' - well aren't you clever.I've just checked on him. He's still alive, bless him. I guess that even if he doesn't make it through the night, it's a lot better than being eaten alive right? He's just had a little bit of sloppy weat-a-bix (: He seems to be running around ok and he's quite restless now. So I might take a quick look around the area I found him.I woke up this morning hearing him call for food, so he made it through the night (: Turns out, he's a thrush. He looks so much more like one, with the little fuzzy feathers sticking up on his head and back and that *moody* looking beak, hehe. Well he's had a few mushed up berries, and mushed up cat food and he's asleep right now. He happily sits on my hand to eat, and nodded off resting on me too ^^ Thankyou! moreResolved Question: What edible garden plants can be ripe in the winter?!?

Hi, I recently bought my first house which has a large garden. Its always been my dream to have a garden full of veg. So started de-weeding/loosening the soil of a large patch in the garden...never knew it was such back breaking & exhausting work! Afterwards, I chose afew veg to try out, chitted potatos, carrots seeds, beetroot seeds, cauliflower seeds, transferring my indoor pumpkin plants to outdoors...currently,only the potatoes & beetroots are doing ok,the rest didn't even bother to pop out of the ground,& my pumpkin plants have turned into all colours of the rainbow before finally dying. My colleague then leant me this book on gardening, which said I had to properly prepare the soil with manure/compost/ fertilisers/air out the soil,& to start from autumn, throughout winter, before planting in spring! Is this really necessary?? Or is it just bad luck that everything I plant ends up dead? & are some veg just more demanding than others & should only be left to the experts? Thanks. moreResolved Question: What flowers will you be growing in your gardens this season?
From Virginia, here What do you envision this year? I personally lean towards annuals such as Zinnias, Marigolds, Petunias, Portulaca, Calendula, etc. Some seeds are 7th generation and older. I have plenty of perennials, too. It occurs to me that we may know the same flower by different names! What annuals or perennials do you prefer to work with and what ideas are you working with for your gardens this year?*Edit 1* Kathleen-Virginia is covered in Bluebells this year! Like no prior year! It's a sight to behold, especially driving along the Shenandoah River, where they're on both sides of the road. I am very interested in planting and as I don't own a yard and a small garden, I am doing some indoors. To fill the vases and grow the seeds (sowing) it is necessary to use compost. But unfortunately, from the time I have filled the vases, the number of tiny, black, very weak, flying insects in my flat has increased. I found out that they live on the fresh compost. It's the first I've ever written.?
Weeds My garden flourished with beautiful life, Ideas and opinions blossomed without any apparent effort And anyone who picked them saw their beauty and bathed in them. Then I let the weeds in. Weeds that tricked my garden into allowing them to grow. That led my garden to believe they were rare flora That belonged in there to nourish and protect my crop for as long as it grew. But woe was me. The weeds wrapped their stubby little roots around my produce To choke, staunch and dare I say, kill. My beautiful garden was ugly and I weeped as I grew courage to cut the weeds from it. But seeds were sown. Those weeds had left their mark and turned my delicate garden into one full Of spiteful flowers, weeping hedgerows and angry trees that ruled the grounds. Lords of my garden. Tyrants. Ones not even gardeners remedies could slay I have cried and sobbed over my conquered garden. But I found my weedkiller. Stunning weedkiller that banishes these pests, Making those weeds cower in its presence, Encouraging my beautiful estate to bloom again, even moreso than before. I am addicted to this substance. It continues to protect my garden from the weeds and turns it into the Eden it never got the chance to be. He is my weedkiller.@ kawalski: Naaaw, sorry it doesn't rhyme :(. I am trying to sort out my garden and sowed some grass seed last Sunday early morning on an area 7m by 4m that had no grass. Weather is warmish (13C) I am in the UK. The pack said I should see results in 3 days. It is now Wednesday evening and no sign of life whatsover, the seeds are just all sitting there in the soil. My dad's been doing some gardening and he found the body of the little Robin that's been coming to our garden over the winter. I know it's just a bird and it's not like it was a pet but I did feel a bit sad when he told me. We've been feeding the birds since we moved here last May and it's great to sit at the window and watch them fight over the seeds and have a bath in the dirt - it's better than telly sometimes! As much as I love wildlife programmes I hate it when something dies or gets killed in horrible way but I know it's nature so I get over it. Is this normal or do you think I'm being too emotional about these things? Do you ever feel like this or is it just me being a jelly baby (which I am really but..........!)? Thanks in advance :D moreResolved Question: What fruit and veg grows well in pots on a patio?

I'm a bit worried about bugs and insects eating anything I grow but is there anything I can use to deter them that isn't harmful to humans (I have a baby so don't want anything that could harm him if he does manage to get near it!).
