Open Question: How do people feel about this charter school?Nampa ,ID charter school to use Bible as textbook?

Nampa charter school to use Bible as textbook http://www.magicvalley.com/articles/2009... By JESSIE L. BONNER NAMPA, Idaho - In a former carpet and lighting store turned church, the founders of a new charter school in Nampa sit before a row of pews and outline the curriculum they'll introduce to more than 550 students in August. The first sixth-graders to enroll at Nampa Classical Academy will begin learning Latin. The ninth-graders will delve into the history of Western civilization, with the Bible included as a primary source of teaching material. The Bible will be taught for its literary and historic qualities, as part of a secular education program, headmaster Val Bush said. "Some people are rather bigoted, they say you can use everything but that," Bush said. "We say, 'Why?'" The academy is slated to become the third-largest public charter school in Idaho when it opens this fall. Portable classrooms on a 17-acre property across town from the New Heart Fellowship Church, where the school is temporarily renting office space, will hold 557 students in kindergarten through ninth grade. Two months before classes begin, three people have complained to the state that the public charter school appears rooted in Christian beliefs, academy founder Isaac Moffett said. "We are not a religious school," he said, and students will not receive religious instruction. Idaho lawmakers passed a law allowing public charter schools a decade ago. More than 30 of the schools _ funded with state money but given more flexibility in how they operate _ have been established by teachers, parents and community members, and have a total of about 10,000 students. The movement to create new, more autonomous public schools allowed Nampa Classical Academy to create an education grounded in grammar, logic, rhetoric, arithmetic, geometry, music and astronomy, Moffett said. Moffett, 36, attended the College of Southern Idaho and Boise State University before completing a social and behavioral science degree two years ago at a satellite campus of George Fox University, a private Oregon-based Christian school. He finished his teaching degree at Lewis-Clark State College in northern Idaho last year. "My philosophy did not match anything in traditional education today," said Moffett, who believes the idea that his school is religious stems from the core values the school has adopted. Those values, he said, include character, charity, civility, destiny, discipline, excellence, industry, integrity, service, loyalty, originality and patriotism. "I've had people say they're Christian values. They're not, they're Western values," Moffett said, "You could even call them American values." The school has no affiliation with the church where it temporarily operates down the hall from the office where pastor Randy Reams prepares his weekly sermons, except one of the academy's board members does worship there, Bush said. "It was $300 a month to rent this, it was $1,100 to rent at another place. What would you do?" said Bush, a former Caldwell teacher and school superintendent in Utah and Idaho. As for the Bible, if students are going to learn about Western civilization, they have to learn about the ancient Hebrews, Moffett said, and "the most authoritative text on ancient Hebrews is the Old Testament." "If you want to be a fraud in front of those students, then omit the Bible," he said. "The kids don't have to believe it, but to understand a people's culture you have to understand the religious culture as well." The U.S. Supreme Court, in a 1963 ruling that banned ceremonial school Bible readings, said "the Bible is worthy of study for its literary and historic qualities" so long as material is "presented objectively as part of a secular program of education." While in practice, public schools across the country have traditionally avoided Bible courses and the potential controversy, hundreds do offer voluntary classes to students. Nationwide, 487 school districts and 1,975 high schools in 38 states are teaching Bible classes with materials from the National Council On Bible Curriculum in Public Schools, the Greensboro, N.C.-based organization says. Students at the Nampa academy will read from a New International Version Bible that includes footnotes denoting cultural and archaeology discoveries, Moffett said. When studying literature, students will read from the King James version of the Bible. In Idaho, school districts are not prohibited from using the Bible as part of literature or history courses. "When it comes to a literature class, the state does not have a list of books or novels teachers can use in the classroom," state Department of Education spokeswoman Melissa McGrath said. "I don't think this is the first school to do it. "I think it is a historical text, so obviously schools can look at using it in different ways that don't violate separa more

Resolved Question: Dream to go to Brown U? Help please?

I'm quite worried if I will get into Brown University, which is my top choice of school. I'm going to be a senior in the following year. So far, my GPA is a 3.8 unweighted, and a 4.2 weighted. I've taken 3 APs, and one honors course. And I've volunteered at a nature center, a vet clinic, and worked at various research labs. I received a 750 on my SAT II in World History, and an 790 in my literature test. Also, I'm considered a minority, I've had some works published in poetry books and newspapers, and some artwork as well. Also, I received a 2200 on the SAT. Additionally, I am involved in many clubs in my school, and I started a club last year. Any tips or advice? Brown students?I am very liberal, and I have visited Brown and love it! more

Voting Question: information on possibly paranormal abilities?

Okay, so it might just be my lifelong crush for the paranormal, but I think I might have unnatural abilities. First, ever since i was little, I've had extreme cases of deja vu. There have even been occurances of me at the age of about six seeing a simple flash of a place while I'm sleeping, and never seeing it again until a more recent time(i'm thirteen, soon to be fourteen). I forget about this flash after a few days, until I face the place in person. Then I remember all the way back to the night I first saw it. Second, I can usually understand people with ease, and know what they mean before they explain themselves more thoroughly. Third, I haven't dreamed in a long time(about a year) The closest I have gotten to dreaming lately are the deja vu flashes, but there is one other thing I have had flashes of. While sleeping, I have had single mental flashes of dead people, skeletons or extremely depressed people that I have never seen before. What's weirder than the people? Where they are. The flashes are around my house or in my yard. It is my house, but it's somehow different. More different from when we moved here, almost seven years ago. A way I have never pictured this place. It is hard to explain. Fourth, I hear voices calling my name, and have seen strange shadows or rough makings of what i assume to be people. I have since I was very young. They do not seem to be kind, because I have only seen them when it's dark out, and have only heard them when i'm home alone or everyone else is asleep, making me permenantly afraid of the dark or being alone since a young age. Fifth, I have, from grandparents and even my own mother, been told that my great grandmother was considered a pyschic, and, before her own death, could speak to her late husband. He apparently told her little things she needed to know, like where did she put her sewing kit, ect. I dont have all of the details on this, this is all i know of her. any additional details needed, please let me know. Also, I have always been attracted to antiques or things made and used before I was born. I'm even attracted to olden literature. Cars, Jewlery, Vintage clothing, Worn-in books, you name it. I also am very good at interpreting fragments of sentances from different languages into english. I am only a first-year Italian student, but my friend who has been studying duestch, german, french and other languages from a younge age recently was shocked by my ability to get what she was saying while speaking in fluent duestch. maybe thats a past life thing? If it helps, I am a scorpio, born on November 11th(11/11, strange, i know), so I am a water sign. I also have somehow possesed the ability to cause massive headaches by trying to harness energy into my hands and focus it on someone's head, but anyone who i show this to can do it as well, just not as strong. once in disney world I practiced it on some random man, nearby, trying to conceal my hands from him. I could hear his complaints of a sudden pounding headache, and haven't practiced it since, because i'm scared how powerful it is. more

Resolved Question: How should I prepare myself for English major or Philosophy major?

I'm currently a community college student. I'm 22 and came from s.Korea 7 years ago. I'm thinking about majoring in English or Philosophy and then go for MBA. I have a couple questions regarding this path. 1. For my major, is speed reading necessary? I heard that I'm going to have to read at least 40-100 pages per class everyday. I don't think speed reading would provide me with thorough understanding on details from the pages but I don't know because I'm not a speed reader. 2. How well do I need to comprehend required books? Do I have to be able to read and comprehend all at once? 3. How should I practice to be able to comprehend philosophy books? Which books should I read before stepping into the world of philosophy? I've tried to read some and they are very hard.. and frustrating. 4. How should I accomplish my goal below? My reading skill isn't that great. My WPM is 130 and I have about 2 years to improve my reading skills before I transfer to a 4 year university. I'm planning to read as many books as I can before then. (Shakespeare, literature books and philosophy books on sparknotes, Beowulf, the Canterbury tale, Hemingway etc.) 5. As an English, what are the things you consider when you are reading a book? and How do words, sentences, paragraphs, structures of the book strike you both emotionally and educationally? Thanks for reading my long problem. I appreciate it just for reading my question. more

i think its cruel. we work all week/school year and when we finally get some free time to ourselves, there's more stuff for us to do. for summer reading, i love reading but only when i'm not forced to read and its a book that i find enjoyable, not some boring ancient piece of literature that we have to analyze and answer 100 [yes 100] questions about. what's your opinion? students and non-students. more

Resolved Question: What Young Adult Literature books deal with intimacy?

I am a grad student working on a research project. I am NOT asking for you to do the assignment, especially since this is just research right now. I am studying young adult books that deal with varying levels of intimacy, whether it deal with healthy relationships to sexual abuse/assault, along with self-intimacy (you know what I mean). So far my list includes: Speak Breathing Underwater The Chocolate War Prep The Perks of Being a Wallflower Twilight Deenie Then Again Maybe I Won't Don't Go Home With John Sloppy Firsts and the McCafferty series Can you think of any others that deal with this issue? Can anyone help me jog my memory? Thanks! With Twilight there is something about how he WON'T have sex with her- I am exploring that option as well. I didn't read the book yet, but my prof told me this is the case in Twilight. However, she may have been referring to a different one in the series. Thanks, all. more

Resolved Question: College student in distress...PLEASE HELP!!!?

So I am an English major, and I have to read at least two novels every week, which ends up to be A LOT of reading! In fact, I have to read so much, that I am starting to lose my passion for reading and literature. I don’t even enjoy reading anymore, because whenever I read, I am always taking notes because I am constantly thinking about what I am going to say about the book in class discussion, on exams, and in written papers to the extent where I don’t get a chance to focus on the essence of the novel itself or enjoy reading it at all. I was contemplating just forgetting about taking notes for the next novel, and just sitting down and reading it. Do you think this would be a good idea, or would not taking as many notes impact how I do on my tests, papers, etc? two major advantages of skipping the note taking and just reading the novel are that I can enjoy the reading more, and get more reading done…which would save a lot of time and leave me less stressed out about the reading. getting more reading done may benefit me too, because I would know more about the book, but I’m just scared that not taking notes may cause me to forget stuff and miss important details. what do you think I should do? thank you in advance for your help! more

Resolved Question: Is being a poetry or literature lecturer riskier than other subjects when being accused of sexual harassment?

http://www.guardian.co.uk/books/2009/may/11/smear-walcott-oxford-professor-poetry Ruth Padel has resigned from her new post as Oxford Professor of Poetry on the grounds that she unwisely drew two journalists attention to historical sexual harassment claims made against Derek Walcott (who was her competition in the election for the post). Derek Walcott pulled out of the race, but I find it interesting that in this article he is quoted as saying that his teaching style was "deliberately personal and intense" and that in the case concerned he "sensed no reluctance [in the student] to pursue the topic of sexual relationships". Does the very nature of the topics likely to be discussed in poetry - emotions, feelings, desires etc make it more open to misinterpretation when being taught? Or is this a smoke cloud used by lecherous men to pray on unsuspecting female undergraduates? While I think what Ruth Pedal did was naive and stupid, it doesn't make the fact go away that this guy was twice publicly accused of sexual harassment and in the latter case was made to write a written apology to the girl concerned. This hardly suggests he was entirely innocent. I think in this day and age we care about the character of our heros as well as their abilities and achievements. There will be those that disagree - but how would they feel if they were the ones being harassed? more

Resolved Question: So All These Are New QUESTIONs?

Some of you may have figured out that this is a question about Satan. (I know yahoo is having problems right now but I have precious few more questions available to ask, I've already wasted two of them on this question and I don't want to take any chances of moderator bias) and the question is, despite the fear, if you overlook the idea that some 2000 year old book said he wants to use you as kindling (or at least that's how it gets interpreted) isn't he an intriging myth? What myth is more complex? what myth is more human? A few minutes ago I asked a question about Satan because I basically wanted to show off a wicked awesome video that I saw on youtube (Here's the link if you want to see it http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iL_RbCGxq... ) but it got me thinking... Now I'm not in anyway religious but have you ever noticed that in art and literature the portrayals of Satan are some of the most amazing and complex character studies in our cultural history? Look at Milton's Satan in Paradise Lost. Who doesn't fall for him a little? feel for his cause as he suffers for his convictions? Aren't his pride and his anger what make him the most real and the most complex? He is human, perhaps more human than all of us. How can we relate to the god character? pure good? pure light? what the hell is that? and how is nepotism pure and good? Satan was in the right at the beginning of the story (at least it's up for debate). Don't we all secret root for the resistance? for the underdog? Look at Satan as portrayed by Neil Gaiman in The Sandman vol. 4 Season of Mists (one of my favorite graphic novels that will undoubtedly represent our time period as a classic) Satan begins in our minds as the untrustable, as the vicious monster, but everytime you expect a double cross, he does quite the opposite and he comes through, paranoia sets in and you begin to expect a great intricate scheme, you wonder when he is finally going to burst through the doors with his double cross. He is absent through the majority of the story but still present in the sense that you keep waiting for the sword to fall, and it never does, and in the end you realize that by removing himself completely the ultimate joke is on you the reader because you placed so much confidence and hatred and fear in something that was never there. The apex of the story is when you realize that he and god are equal, just as clever, as sneaky, as manipulative... and just as absent. I don't believe in god, but I sure do love satan. I have to, as a thinker, as a reader, as a student, because his myth is so powerful and the most human of any myth I can think of, his anger, his selfishness, his desperation, his charm, this is the human condition. It makes you wonder what the real intentions of the bible's authors were in painting our natural human inclinations as evil. Who is the most evil? the man who serves his own needs without shame? or the man who sees the world through a veil of guilt, who has desires but sees them as unattainable and wants them more, plots for them, fantasizes... who's the most dangerous?Sorry that link failed here's the real link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iL_RbCGxqsc more

Resolved Question: Horrible SAT scores(High GPA)...Help!?

Horrible SAT scores(High GPA)...Help!? I did not do well at all...=/(This is my first time taking the SAT) My score break down is as follows: Math: 700 Reading: 630 Writing: 660 (A 8 essay) Total: 1990 [PSAT was: 64 M, 64 R, 56 W= 184 or 1840 on SAT scale] I want to go to a good college; however, with this score I obviously can not. I plan to retake this test in October or september(Note: this will be my first time retaking the test). I have a very high GPA with A's in all of my classes. I am a very strong math and science student. I am taking two AP classes( Chemistry and Statistics) , 1 honors class (Math 4H) , and 3 normal classes(English, American History, Keyboarding) this year. Do you think that I can increase my score? If so, please recommend some useful books. I did not go through any books prior to taking the SAT because I was preoccupied by school. I plan to dedicate this up coming summer to the SAT. My goal is to get into Stony Brook or Binghamton. Please list some safety schools! Please answer this question as well: Will colleges look down on me because I do not take AP English Language? I could take AP English Literature next year; however, wouldn't doing so be to big of a a big jump considering I am only in normal english? I chose to take Regular english because I wanted to learn GRAMMAR, and basic writing skills- basic skills that I lacked at the beginning of this year. I am a fast reader and a growing writer. AP English teachers expect students who are already good at grammar-correct? So wouldn't it be shrewd to continue with regular english(Next years class is termed College Prep english)? Thank you- sorry for writing so much....agh So much is on my mind! I will add some details about my SAT experience: >I was quite nervous. >For the reading comprehension, I read the passage and then answered the questions. I usually finished the reading sections with 6 minutes to spare. I did not check my answers. I just waited for the next section. Thank you for the helpful tips@_@ more

Voting Question: How can I get funding/sponsorship for educational travel?

I am hoping to be able to teach English, History, and Literature at the high school level when I get my degree, and while I do learn a lot from books and my college classes, I'd like to be able to travel to some historical places to experience them for myself - for example, to Salem or Boston or D.C. I could even travel overseas and study British Literature in England, Irish Literature in Ireland, or visit what's left of Dachau. While this sounds all well and good, it sounds like "fun", too, and I can't imagine too many places willing to send a student or group of students off to a city for a few days or a week or however long just for them to experience it and have a better understanding of the history of a particular place. The unfortunate reality is that I'm a poor college student who's struggling enough as it is to pay rent and car insurance (I'm about to drop car insurance after this summer and move into a cheaper apartment). While I excel in my classes and work very hard towards my degree, I feel that these experiences would nto only enrich my education but also allow me to provide my future students with a better education, as well. Is there anything that I could possibly look into? more

Resolved Question: Can someone please tell me when school is out? Can we YA surfers have our site back to discuss real questions?

I used to love the history/literature section of Y!A, but lately it is filled with questions that could only be regarded as people's homework. I really am looking forward to the return to indepth questions that could only come from reading books about the subject. If I were a History or English teacher, I would visit this site to see which of my students pulled answers to my take home exam. Of course, there wouldn't be any take home exams. They would all be done in class. Forgive me, I'm just annoyed. more

Resolved Question: Does President Obama really know Constitutional Law?

Did he actually practice it or does he have a Degree to Show with no experience to back it up. Below is 1 small part of a Report so PLEASE Read the Full Link and let me know what you think: http://www.americanthinker.com/2008/08/barack_obama_legal_scholar.html Legal expertise Senator Obama often invokes his expertise on constitutional law. Does he actually have any? You can't tell from his publications, and he even lacks a record of intellectual engagement as a legal scholar. Although he was president of the Harvard Law Review as a student, in which capacity he no doubt wrote some unsigned notes, a search of the HeinOnline database of law journals turns up exactly nothing credited to Obama in any law review anywhere at any time. This is yet more indication that his status as "lecturer" at Chicago was not a regular faculty appointment, since regular full-time faculty are expected to produce scholarship. Notwithstanding an apparent eleven-year teaching career in constitutional law at a top-flight law school, not one single article, published talk, book review, or comment of any kind, appears anywhere in the professional legal literature, under Barack Obama's name. As a person who prides himself on his legal background, should we be surprised that he did not seek a seat on the judiciary committee, a coveted spot for the Senate's most legal beagles?Spud : He sited the articles that backs up what he said. This information he is bringing about is factual and anyone can google "Obama's work as an Attorney" and read different artilces. I read one from his professor at Harvard and he even said Obama couldn't be an Attorney as he couldn't speak without talking in circles and he didn't have a loud Voice. It seems clear Obama only has a Stern Loud Voice when he Uses the Teleprompter. Which is misleading as anyone could do it.G J : BINGO, WE HAVE A BINGO! more

Resolved Question: Can anyone recommend a good girly book?

Can anyone recommend a good book to take on holiday with me? Preferably something girly! I am a philosophy and literature student and spend the whole year reading challenging books, so i really enjoy a good romance novel on holiday. Any recommendations? more

Resolved Question: Can anyone recommend me a book in Spanish?

I'm a Spanish student looking to improve my skills and vocabulary, so I wanted to tackle a Spanish novel during the summer, but I wanted to see if anyone had any recommendations first. I don't want to read any terribly difficult literature, just something middle-range to become more familiar with the language. Once I attempted to read 'Relato de un naufrago' by Gabriel Garcia Marquez and I found it to be too dry to stay motivated. I would be willing to consider the Spanish version of a book originally written in English, but I would prefer if it were originally a Spanish novel. more

Resolved Question: information on psychic abilities?

I could hear his complaints of a sudden pounding headache, and haven't practiced it since, because i'm scared how powerful it is.viviane: I dont watch tv, and i go to see movies every few months if one looks good. im a total bookworm, however. dont assume you understand something.shout in the dark: yes, i used my hands because i could feel the energy between them, making it easy. i began doing this in fourth grade and have caused friends slight headaches, but i usually told them beforehand and thought maybe they just were pretending. but two years ago, when that guy from disney world was pounding on a wall yelling for his wife to hand him some advil and water asap, it occured to me that it acutally worked, because he had no knowledge of what the little 11 year old stranger nearby could do to him. more

Resolved Question: uncle toms cabin......................................?

Uncle Tom’s Cabin isn’t read much in America today, except by students taking courses in American history, American literature, and related disciplines. When it was first published, however, the book was the biggest, blockbuster best-seller in the nation’s history. Why did this book sell so well at the time of its publication? In your answer, use the political, social, religious, and literary context of ante-bellum America as well as the content of the book itself to explain the reasons for its popularity. Why did this pot-boiler novel sweep the reading public? What were the results of the novel and the impressions it made on its vast readership for the nation’s history? more

Resolved Question: How to analyze literature through a feminist and masculist (?) perspective?

I'm doing an analysis of two works of literature, but I don't know how to start. So: 1) what is the male word that opposes feminism, as in...which word describes authors who write to undermine male characters as opposed to authors who write to glorify female characters? 2) I am trying to analyze two pieces of literature. One I think glorifies women and undermines men and the other glorifies men and undermines women. Both books are written by women. I've never approached a book from these two perspectives, so... which literary devices do university students and professors who study Women's Studies and Men's Studies, which lit. devices they use when analyzing works of literature? 4) How must I approach a work of Literature from these two perspectives and what must I pay attention to when reading a book? Thanks! from: Junior High School Student. more

Resolved Question: Native Americans: may I know more about you?

Hello everyone, I'm a Tunisian student of English Literature and Civilization. When we started dealing with american civilization we had some texts about native americans: mainly talking about the first confrontations of the new comers and the native people. We didn't go deep in details, the teachers mentioned some information about the beliefs of Native americans, which was enough for me to fall in love with them. Now I'm really intrested in learning more about them. It would be great if you could provide me with websites, books etc... I'm also looking for a native american pen pal or an epal. Thank you. more

Resolved Question: Do I need to apply for an Adult Education Credential in the state of California?

My question is the following: I wanted to design a curriculum based on a personal development book. My curriculum design will become a 6 weeks Personal Development Course to be taught online or face to face to students of different ages. Do I need an Adult Education or a Teaching Credential for this? I will NOT be offering any type of credential or Professional Certification; we would ONLY be studying with a methodology a Course that will enrich peoples’ lives. The literature that I have researched on the web is not as clear as to who absolutely needs an AE Credential in California. I understand and see the value of an AE to teach and certify a professional skill or an academic course like Math, English, Sociology, etc., but what I want to do does not fall into this realm. more

Resolved Question: Need ghost related songs.?

i read the book "The living and the Dying" and i have to make a soundtrack that represents scenes/themes/moments. Whether you read the book or not i need songs about ghosts or being haunted by them. Here is some info: In Natale Ghent's The Book of Living and Dying, the daily experiences of a high school senior, Sarah, are punctuated by horrible flashbacks to hospital scenes. Sarah is mourning the death, from cancer, of her elder brother John. These unpleasant memories relate to his terminal illness. Or do they? Sarah is haunted by her brother. The odor of earth and rain signal his approach. His appearances, to sit on her bed, are not a source of comfort; rather, she pleads with him to go away. Ongoing headaches plague her, for which she takes codeine. Sarah has no adult to confide in, as her father predeceased her brother, and her mother is withdrawn. At school, she has only two friends, Peter, who is over-protective and wants to be her boyfriend, and Donna, a daring rebel. This highly descriptive and evocative work seems to be moving along the lines of a traditional teen "problem novel," until Sarah meets a new student. His name, Michael Mort, should signal to anyone who knows French that he is more than just a teenage boy. Michael Mort looks older than seventeen and sports a goatee. His "dark, brooding looks" convey "thinly veiled disdain." He has a coyote tattooed on his shoulder and explains that in mythology it is a trickster with the power to assume other forms. Michael Mort's hobby is taking still photos and animating them, creating videos in which the person seems to be alive. He makes such a video of John. He and Sarah fall in love. Donna suggests that John may be haunting Sarah because he is "in limbo" and having trouble "crossing over." In a book store, the girls come upon a Book of Living and Dying, which may be the Tibetan Book of the Dead. Sarah reads that hauntings are rarely violent but are generated by the living person's thoughts of the deceased and their incapacity to atone. Death can be confusing for the dead, she reads. They can get lost on their journey. The living must hold a ritual so that the dead person knows what has happened to him. Author Natale Ghent excels in employing tried-and-true symbols and plot devices to create an unsettling atmosphere. These include trap doors, woodland circle ceremonies with magic mushrooms, Tarot cards, a visit to Salem and a fortune teller. The dying kingfisher, which appears toward the end of the novel, ultimately ties in with a broken blue bottle but is interesting as an allusion to the Fisher King, a legend of death and rebirth that one finds in the Arthurian legends, in Percival, and The Wasteland. The cover blurb of this novel suggests that it is a cautionary tale about the consequences of abusing alcohol and drugs and taking up with bad companions. It isn't! Rather, it is a story of the supernatural in the same category as the movies, Sixth Sense and Crossing Jordan. For much of the story, Sarah does not know what is real and what she is imagining, and neither does the reader. One assumes that the hospital flashbacks pertain to John's illness, but since the patient is not specified, they could apply to Sarah, as could Donna's remarks that the dead sometimes don't know they're deceased and must be eased into death. This novel cries out to become a horror movie. Along with staple devices from film and literature, Ms. Ghent brings her own warped slant on something as wholesome as the coming of spring. Sarah, looking out her window, sees the hatching of baby birds as depressing. more

Resolved Question: How screwed am I, financially? What can I do to help myself?

This is going to be long, but it's a somewhat desperate cry for help, and I really have no idea where else to go with it. I am a 24-year-old college student on my third major; I decided to switch from something I knew how to do, to pursue a lucrative job I'd probably hate (computers), to something I like and will continue to love to do, though it's not as lucrative (teaching literature). Last year, I moved on from a community college to a University, and I'm now broke. Last year, I moved back in with my mother; my parents have been divorced for 6 years. My father quit his medical practice in my hometown, moved across the country, quit his job there, and is now filing for bankruptcy and does not pay my mother alimony. My mother lost her job a couple of weeks ago working for a land company, and cannot file for unemployment. She has a master's degree in business, but her degree is "old", and at 52, she is having difficulty competing with younger people. She does not have a lot of money, since in the divorce, my father took most of our "stuff", and she was left with our property - which isn't selling. Just after the divorce, I sold most of my stuff - movies, books, DVDs, video games, computer equipment, even furniture - to save money for college expenses. For a couple of years, it was just fine - I had just enough spending money and a steady enough job that paid enough and had enough hours that I could focus on my classes and not have much to worry about while I lived at home and helped pay for groceries and such. Well, that all changed pretty quickly. Last summer, my car broke down - the transmission blew while pulling out of a parking lot. I had to wind up buying a new car. There goes a lot of money, right there. After that, a theater group I'm in went to Salem, Massachusetts to do some research on the Salem Witch Trials for the play, The Crucible. I wound up having to take my car, because I was the only other person with a reliable automobile for the long trip besides the one car we had already planned to be taking. Which meant that I needed to buy new tires. Some people pitched in for gas, and everyone paid for their hotel room, but as the trip went on, I wound up covering a lot of expenses. I spent $1800 in a single weekend buying tires, gas, food, drinks, tours, books, and props for the play. I was paid for about $70 worth of props and a fair amount of the gas from everyone. Not a single person paid me back for the food and drinks I wound up buying, or the tour tickets I bought them. Some people bought me dinner at later dates and such, but I didn't get paid back. I'm a college student, I can't afford to throw that kind of money down on a weekend excursion. But, I did. I have since not trusted anyone to borrow money from me. Later that summer, I was in a car accident with my (now-ex) girlfriend. I spent a week in the hospital and suffered a closed head injury that has affected and continues to affect my memory and attention, to the point where I basically read at a snail's pace. Doesn't bode well for classes, especially for classes in my particular field of study (English/Education/Literature). Worst part is, my insurance didn't initially pay for anything at all. I was airlifted from the accident - cost $900. My anesthesia still hasn't been paid for, don't remember how much that was. One of my surgeries wasn't even initially covered - I wound up ponying up for a lawyer, with my mother's help, which helped us to get them to pay for most of it, finally - then we had to pay the lawyer, of course. It's still ongoing. Anesthesia still isn't paid for. We still can't afford it ourselves, either. After the accident, I had a hard time going back to real life. I couldn't move to where I had planned because I couldn't take a full load of classes that semester, move, and find a new job without being completely overwhelmed, so I stayed at home and took 2 classes and went back to work as I had been. As far as work goes, my workplace was told by one of my doctors to only have me work 8 hours per week, because of my mental condition (I still tend to get pretty overwhelmed by things) - at 8.50 an hour, that's not a lot of money. I received a month of lost wages, and am supposedly to be paid 80% of the difference between my 8-hour weeks and what I would otherwise be working since that month, but I haven't seen a dime. I'm also buying audiobooks and cliff's notes to help with my reading and retention, which my insurance company is supposed to help pay for. They haven't done that, either. I used to work as an English tutor for local high school students; I still get calls about it every so often, and I still try to do a little bit of work. It pays pretty well ($20/hour sometimes) for the short periods of time I get to do it, but it takes a lot out of me. I buy copies of all the required readings at the local high schools and keep up on those books, on top of the own that I have for my classes. more

Resolved Question: What do you think about this flyer?

I am home for the summer and this is a flyer that I am passing around my town in the hopes of making some extra money as well as keeping myself in what I love...BOOKS! Flyer: I am a student at Northern Illinois University, studying literature. While I am home for the summer, I’d like to start a book club here in Gilman. This idea is in it’s beginning stages so I’d like to give you a chance to experience my vision. If you are interested, please pick up a copy of Kate Chopin’s The Awakening. It’s a very quick read (about 100 pages) and I believe you will find many topics to discuss within it. more

Resolved Question: I sent this to a Christian co-worker and she didn't understand it. What should I do?

I accept ALL people of ALL faiths and religions in this world unconditionally. Although I differ with some aspects of some of these religions, I understand where all of them come from and I completely accept all of them. As for me, I consider myself a student of all things spiritual. Now, I have a co-worker who's a born-again Christian. She is a lovely, wonderful woman. But she continually misunderstands me and my beliefs. Often she tries to explain the Bible to me. I just listen intently, without offering my true feelings about the book. I choose to keep whatever my feelings are to myself, as to respect her faith and beliefs. I do not think she is ready to know and to grasp what I learned throughout my spiritual studies. Actually, I think she is SCARED to death of knowing what I know. She completely denies the little I've told her as being false. That is completely okay with me. I am not here to save her or anyone else. And I'm definitely not here to impose my beliefs on anyone else either. Anyway, yesterday I sent some of my co-workers a BEAUTIFUL poem by Lebanese poet Khalil Gibran, from his book entitled THE PROPHET. Now, the poem talks about a true marriage and how two people can achieve happiness in marriage. In any case, it was a POEM! It had nothing to do with religion or anything like that. And, might I add, it was a gorgeous, wonderful piece of literature too. She wrote me back only: "A prophet? What kind of prophet?" Now... tell me if I'm wrong in assuming that she didn't even READ the poem! It looks to me like she got stuck on the word "prophet" and completely missed the whole point of the poem (how to have a happy and healthy marriage). Thanks for reading this, folks. It's just that... I'm having a little hard time deciding whether or not to share anything else with this woman. I do like her but... her mind seems to be closed shut at this time... What do you all think? Thanks. Love and blessings to all.Priรciℓℓα ☼... yeah! That's a great idea!Deep Thought, I'm seriously considering that. If she doesn't even read what I send her and completely pre-judges everything... what's the point of trying to share anything with her...crystal, I've been thinking the same thing. However, she cannot help herself and trying to "Christianize" every one of us. She gives me things to read too. I read them. It doesn't bother me. I think Jesus Christ was one of the brightest lights to ever be born on this planet. And I love his teachings!Sara, what you wrote is just GORGEOUS! And so true. Thank you so much for that!!!!Ginchi, I disagree with you about Gibran. And... I don't think of myself as better or worse than her. I just think all I know is so completely foreign to her that it would probably take her sometime to assimilate everything. How do I know this? Because it took me years to get to where I am. And I LOOKED and SEARCHED. *smiles* Thanks for your answer, though. A little crabby, but I'll take it anyway. :)You also make a good point, "Follow Jesus." Maybe I should have explained the whole thing to her... But I thought it best to just let the whole thing alone for a while, while I thought about the best way to deal with it. I don't want to hurt her feelings in any way, shape of form. Thanks for a lovely and inspiring reply, Sherry. :) more

What does this say about the school's priorities? What does this say to Miss Narwin about her value as a teacher? Resolved Question: can anyone edit this letter before Monday?

hi, can anyone edit this for me before4 this Monday it supposed to be a letter stating why i want to be a Cheyne letter it's like an award you win before you finish high school thanx o the eminent members of the graduation committee: Just as a tiger represents stealthiness, I am a perfect candidate to represent Cheyne middle school. I 'm not over confident because, there are many students who, equally deserve this award. At the same time, I can tell with certainty that I have qualified all the expectations to be a Cheyne letter. In the following epistle I will summarize the interests I have in my community. I'm a grade 8 student in Mr. Sarkar's class. My priorities are books, club meetings, and the school community. Unlike most of my friends, I consider Math amusing and grade 9 literature interesting. I have done considerably well in all my academics and I am always consistent in my work. I enjoy coming to school everyday and have gained the respect of my peers. Although my interest in academics are very high, I have gained a lot of interest in the clubs at Cheyne. Being Interpersonal in grade five, I learned a lot from the clubs Cheyne offers when I came to grade six. Enjoying my three years at Cheyne Middle School, I was shocked when I found out, most kids around the world don't have this privilege. Most of the clubs I join inside and outside of school are to raise awareness of discrimination. To name a few, I have taken part in Asian heritage month, go girls, Me To We etc. to spread one message: If you are different in some walks of life, like gender, religion or race, it is something to be proud of not ashamed, it makes us unique! I have once donated $1200 made from my lemonade stand, collected 556 clothes and 1041 canned items by opening a collection booth in the summer of 2007. I feel every kid in Canada should speak out, I do by supporting these organizations. You may think academics, fund raising, and club meetings are keeping me entertained but, I'm a kid! Like most kids, I need relaxation from a day's work. I overcome the stress by volunteering at libraries in and out of school. Classical singing, playing the piano and long hours of yoga give me peace of mind. This routine keeps me well balanced and able stay consistent in my priorities. Trying my best at Cheyne, I feel I have qualified all the expectations. If I am given this honorable chance, I will do my utmost best to represent the characteristics of a Cheyne letter, a well-rounded student that has respect from others, themselves and the capability to maintain these actions through out their lives. I hope you have found my letter pleasant to read and will consider my request. The three years at Cheyne Middle School will be most remembered in my life, and being a Cheyne letter will make it even more special. Sincerely, brindah more

Resolved Question: I need to do a research paper with a topic related to math, any suggestions on good topics?

Any ideas on research paper topics involving Math? I have to do a research paper for my education class, and the topic has to be math related because I am a math major. It doesn't have to be something complicated or even involve solving problems (preferable no solving problems). It can relate to how students learn math, mathematicians, math and careers, pretty much anything that is math related. It can be a topic at a mid-late high school level, even though I am in college. I don't want anything that involves proofs or solving problems. It can involve how to teach math. My paper has to be 10 pages, and i need to be able to find internet or books sources. The topics I have considered so far (as examples) are: Math and Careers--different jobs that use math and how. NYS math exams- positive and negative, difficulty, etc. A project on like lesson plans for what student would have learned. Math and the Bible (my friend did a similar project) It can be a topic that has several topics with in it and i could write 5 or more smaller papers with in one, or it can be one big topic taking up all 10 pages. Any suggestions would be great. It's a normal research paper, just the topic i have to choose has to be math related (other students are doing history, science, or literature related depending on their major-and those topics seem easier to come up with ideas.) No physics please, I know sciences involve math, but I don't want science. Thank you in advance for any suggestions you can make. Resolved Question: How can I enhance my memory?

Hi, Just to give u a little bit of my background. I'm going to college this year. I'm a straight-As student most (not all...haha) of the time. However, I memory skills are below average. I still remember that I usually have to stay up late going through my materials repeatedly on memory-intensive subjects like Geography, History, Biology, English Literature before my tests. It is nightmarish, to say the least. I drew mindmaps after mindmaps just to remember key concepts for Biology. Out of necessity, I became quite good at coming up with concise summaries of what I've learnt. My memory bank is not that big, so I have to select the most important things to remember. However, my lousy memory skills is now very annoying to me. I read many books and often find that I can hardly remember anything about them (except for a few key points) at all. This means tons of knowledge that I could have acquired are lost! I've tried to rectify the problem by drawing very simple mindmaps as I read my books so that I can remember them a bit better. But this mindmap thing is becoming a bit of a hassle and has considerably slow down my reading. How can i improve my memory? Yeah I know, I'm not gifted. I'm just a very average student... more

Resolved Question: Do you know any good Chick Lit?

I love to read but because I am a Literature student I usually have to read symbolic, deep, meaningful stuff that racks my brain! So in my leisure time I love to read chick lit (aka really girlie books about shopping and men). Anyone know any good reads? Some of my favourites(just so you know where I'm coming from) include: All of Sophie Kinsella books, Chasing Harry Winston and (just begun reading it) 10 reasons not to fall in love. more

Resolved Question: What books should I read?

I'm a french speaking student who wants to go to a english university. What piece of literature (novels, essays, etc.) or/and which authors should I read to improve my english and better my comprehension of english cultures?I already have some english friends, but I need something more. My english proficiency is due to them, but I need to take i t to another level for college. more

Resolved Question: Do some teachers honestly assign students to do a character analysis or compare and contrast of Twilight?

I love those books, don't get me wrong, but it just seems that since they are such bad writing and not considered good literature at all, they would not be a prime candidate for teachers to assign them. I've seen a lot of questions on Y!Answers saying 'I have to do a character analysis on Bella for school..." I was wondering, do some teachers actually assign these mediocre books for the class to read? more

Resolved Question: What are some good young adult reads?

I'm a 24-year old graduate student at Syracuse University, earning my MLIS in school library media. I'm going to be a high school librarian. I have a strong love and appreciation for reading and literature...but not young adult (teen) literature. I like the classics...Catcher in the Rye, 1984, To Kill a Mockingbird, etc., but I just can't seem to get into the more modern young adult lit. (Sarah Dessen, Terry Truman, Jerry Spinelli, etc...) It seems like these are the types of authors that students are reading right now. Of course I understand that I need to read these books from the perspective of a teenager and my point is not to eliminate or bash these types of books...I'm just looking for suggestions. I'm sure that there are many current authors of young adult lit. that I'm just not aware of, but I'm not sure where to find them or who to ask, when so many of the librarians seem to be a part of the "Twilight" craze! Any author/title suggestions would be great! Modern adult novels that might be appropriate for high school students would be great too! Thanks, in advance : ) more

Resolved Question: Is anyone but me more than a little disturbed at the recent media?

What is with this lauding of half-wit writers like Stephenie Meyer and Dan Brown as some sort of literary phenomenon? I'm aware enough to know that the majority of it is just marketing and money, but still... as someone who studies Chaucer and Faulkner, it's hard for me to even give writers like that more than a courtesy read. I acknowledge their popularity as easily-read trash, but the fact that the media pushes such things as real literature is worrisome to me. It's bad enough that other mediums have gone to the dogs in respect of actual worth; does literature have to, too? The thing that western civilization built its educational methods on? It worries me as a student, as someone training to be a teacher, and as someone who loves books that such ignorance and lack of quality is being validated by the world-at-large. Does anyone else have opinions or thoughts on this? more

Resolved Question: So, do you think you'd make a good teacher?

Just wondering. You can copy and paste the questions into your answer if it makes easier. 1- Do you think you would make a good teacher? 2- What level(s) would you prefer to teach at: elementary, middle school, high school, or university/college? 3- Which subject(s)/elective(s) would you like to teach? 4- Public or private school: would it matter to you? 5- Would you enjoy it? 6- Would it take a certain kind of student to like you, or would your students in general like you? 7- Even if your chosen subject to teach wasn't English or literature-related, would you still keep books/have a library in your classroom? ** If you were a high school English teacher what book(s) would you be more than happy to teach to your class? more
