Open Question: If you do not like it then , Leave!?

Is it just me who finds it offensive, when people complain about something that has been british all along.. example...World cup 2006 Bus driver has england flag at back of bus.. Complaint was made by a Asain...Bus driver had to take it down Example Man has a car pound/ or pub or something cant remember exactley..called the greasy pig, islam across the road who have a church (the greasy pig was there before them!!) complained, and the owner had to remove sign Example Father christmas in birmingham was removed/ stopped as it offended other cultures I am in no way racist, i would say the same if it was someone british, but if you come to ''our home'' get on living our way or Get on your bike and live.. I find it soo disguisting councils and local government would set sides with the minority, How would you feel if someone came to your house and sai well we will take this painting down, i dont like that, will paint these walls there offensive colours, and we will get rid of your dog we dont believe in dogs... Argghhhhh... How bout trying to keep britain british ...Glad i got that off my chest! Ronaldo £80 million...disgusiting! Ha more

Resolved Question: Using waterproof sealant on victorian brickwork?

We have just had the gable end of our 3 storey red brick victorian house repointed. The surface of the bricks are hard and sound. The builder suggests that we waterproof the whole of the wall with sealant. Are there pros and cons? I always thought that bricks needed to be able to breathe. Also, we will shortly be having all the exterior windows and doors repainted. If any of the sealant runs onto the wood during application, will it stop the paint adhering or will it sand off? Thanks to anyone who can help. more

Resolved Question: Old House...Any DIY tips?

Hi! My hubby and I (who are both clueless about DIY) have just bought an old 1940s town house, which is in good nick, but needs some TLC. We are going to buy a good DIY manual, but until then I was hoping we could get some simple starter DIY tips from your experiences? Basically, the guy who lived their before us must have thought he was a DIY guru as there is a lot of his 'handywork' which has bad finishes. So we will hopefully be removing these things in the future. At the moment we are thinking of painting first. Any tips on that? I.e Sanding the walls? Colours? Paints? Any help at all would be appreciated. more

Voting Question: How to IMPROVE this PIECE OF WRITING!!!!!!10POINTS THANKS!!!!!!!?

"Tom, am getting out of this house! I don't give a crap if you ever see me or your daughter Amy again!". Mum shouted. Both my parents have been everlastingly arguing. My mum is always the one who causes fights to begin. I sometimes feel like I'm to blame. I have always tried to stop them from these devastating fights, but it has been extremely difficult. Things only got worse day after day. I remember the day they got divorced. I was upstairs in my room. I heard some noises, then Slowly I threw my book on the carpet. I opened the door to the voice of my father crying. I could tell he was heart broken and crestfallen. It was the first time I heard my dad crying that much. I quickly ran down the stairs wondering what had happened. I saw him standing against the kitchen door crying. I stood still in shock and fear, my heart skipped a beat at the sight of my father and what state he was in. Drops of tears were rolling down his eyes. I didn’t even know why they got divorced mum just wouldn’t even allow me to speak to her about it. They didn't tell me very much. My dad wouldn't let my mom leave at two in the morning. He said it was shaming to be a the disco at that hour, and his wife wouldn't sink to that level. I could have heard them screaming at each other from a mile away. I was only thirteen when my mom divorced my dad, and to be honest it wasn't easy. I wasn't happy with them separating but mostly I wasn't happy because I was separating from them. well, from my dad at least, he was the only person I really loved. He always loved me and held his arm out when I needed a true friend to talk to. Dad was always my super hero. He was the best person I ever know. He gave me everything I want, from freedom to love. I never had any problems with him. However, Mum was always the opposite of Dad. Mum is the prettiest lady I have ever seen. Yet, her temper is equal to her prettiness. She was almost always annoyed and would never allow me to do anything I wanted to. My mom had decided that there's no need to stay here when nothing was holding us to. “Mum bolted into the kitchen with a tomato-red face and began to scream in a thundering voice.” She was on the phone a couple of seconds ago giggling!. "Amy pack your suitcase with everything you need were getting out of here today!" Mum screamed at me and pushed me up the stairs so I would start moving, "Shoo!" was her last word before I went to pack. A shiver went down my spine as I began throwing everything I could possibly think of into my suitcase. My mother has dictated my life ever since I could remember. My father however, is different. He grants my every wish no matter how extreme they maybe. I rushed to my room quickly, I could hear my mum yelling at my dad in a very dangerous tone. “ I have no time to waste listening to you now just shut up and don't utter a word.” she shouted. I stood in shock and fear starring at my window blinds! I was paranoid, very hurt, nervous and heart sore no words could describe how I felt at the current time. I got a bad sense of taste, I couldn’t figure out what it was!. I couldn’t help do anything but cry. I bursted into tears, shook my head in disgrace. So we moved to another city. Actually she moved, I was just dragged. Against my will of course. My mum couldn’t care less. I couldn’t even hug my dad for the last time, apparently I had no right!. She was on the phone hysterically laughing. I was disappointed. I just didn’t understand how she had the guts to act like that. My mum drove me in her black Ferrari on my first day of school. It was like something out of the olden days or Simeo sort of vampires Laure with a gothic black and red logo to represent the school. it sent a shiver down my spine; not such a good feeling on my first day of school. My mom and I quickly walked into the unfamiliar school and instantly found ourselves waiting in a queue outside the reception area. I stood nervously, adjusting my multicoloured tie, pondering what was to come. The snooty receptionist appeared from behind the large, oval desk and gestured for me to sit in one of the two empty seats outside the office just as I had properly fixed my tie. Suddenly my mom was gone but not before giving me a brief peck on my forehead, and there I was alone. Wishing I could be anywhere but here, I just wanted her with me. The dark concrete wall was stained and the ground littered with papers and chewing gum. Not exactly the most appealing school out there. In fact, I was quick to label it 'the ugliest school building in the whole WORLD'. I mean, it was even worse than my old school! I’ve always thought my old school was the ugliest looking school in the earth but I guess it Wasn’t. And trust me, that's saying something. The school crest was painted right next to the heavy black doors. It was a red and black logo, gothic-looking. OK PLEASE TELL ME HOW TO IMPROVE it more

Resolved Question: How can I seal rust spots before painting my house?

I am planning on painting my house in the summer. It is a 30's semi with pebble dash and whoever applied the pebble dash used nails knocked into the surface of the house to get a level finish. The problem is that the ends of the nails are rusty and I need to know how I can seal them before applying masonry paint. I have looked into Hammerite but I am not sure that it will adhere to the masonry around the nail head. The head of the nails do not protrude past the surface of the wall so they cannot be removed. Thanks for any help that you can give me. more

Resolved Question: What should i do with my room when i move? Please Help!?

My family is moving soon to a house that will be considerably smaller than the one i have at the moment, which means i'm going to have a room that will be TONS smaller than i'm used to, so i want some decoration ideas. My current room is about 13x15 ft and in it i have a desk, two single beds, a chest of drawers, a bedside table and a triple doored wardrobe. When i move i'll have a room about 9x9 ft ( : ( ). My mum reckons i'll be having the same furniture (minus one of the beds) but i think the stuff i have is too big to fit into a room that size. I think i'm going to have to get a double doored wardrobe, a smaller desk and a smaller chest of drawers. I want this new room to really reflect me because my current room is just really plain and boring. I want a theme (either something like music or nature OR a colour OR something like retro) I really want white furniture but it needs to be reallyyyyy cheap otherwise my mum wont buy it. The essentials are: Bed, Desk, Wardrobe, Chest of Drawers. It would be really good if either the desk or the wardrobe could be the corner variety to save space. I also want shelves for extra space for books and stuff. So, first part of this question- where can i find nice but cheap furniture on a budget? Second part- colours and themes. I want the room to be really interesting and something i wont get bored of- i spend ALL my spare time in my room, so it has to be good! I was thinking like a stave across one wall with music notes on (i love music) or one wall painted that cool pinky red colour and the others white? Basically, ideas that will make my room unique but not weird. sorry- really hard question to answer, but like i said, my room is important to me. so to sum up what i want: -cheap but NICE furniture website -design and colour ideas -furniture and colour combination ideas -pictures of rooms to give me ideas (this is really important) thanks to anyone who answers! sorry i'm so picky! more

Resolved Question: What would your dream house be like?

Mine would a big victorian house that still has some of it's original walls etc. With lots of grounds to it in the country side (not big on living in the city) I would have lots of little rooms (don't like the big open plan rooms) there would lots of Murals in the hall ways. I would have a big bed room with satin covers and curtains the go round a nice big king size bed with lots cushions. My room would have it's bathroom with a circular tub and heated towel rails. With tails all over (or maybe i would just have a wet room) I would have my own heart shape heated in door swimming pool and Saunder. Also i would a private cinema (only a small 1) My main living room and Kitchen would be Moroccan style with walls painted a a dark peachy colour. Of coarse i would have butlers and cleaners (come on u don't think i would clean it all my self do u) then to top it all of i would have about 3 Great Danes which wold mean my own grooming parlour. Yes i wish i could afford any of this. U guys? :) more

Resolved Question: Do you think children of women prisoners are better off "living with mom" inside prisons?

Children living in prison with their Mothers rattle off what they like best about their community: the mess hall, their friends, the food, the paint — and, for many, just "living with mom." They're living with mom, however, inside the Women's Correctional Facility in La Paz, Bolivia. There are about 250 prisoners here — and also 100 kids. In fact, the country's lock-ups house more than 1,400 children behind electrified, fence-topped walls and below shotgun-guarded towers. Among the prisoner-mothers at the Women's Correctional Facility is Andrea Virginia Tapia, who has been behind bars for four years and is expected to be released next year. (She won't discuss her crime.) "Above all in this life, I am a mother," says Tapia, who is in her 30s and is the mother of seven kids, four of whom live in the prison with her. http://www.time.com/time/world/article/0,8599,1890642,00.html?xid=rss-world-cnn more

we've just bought a house that's been empty since september, the guttering has been blocked and overflowed and ran down the exterior wall, resulting in a damp/water stain/mould in one of the bedrooms. Its like dark mould and water stains that has caused the wallpaper/paint to bubble. how can i fix this (in simple terms please!! lol!) Resolved Question: How does this sound to you?

Okay this was origionally some homework i did for English class, but it kinda morphed into a mini project when the teacher basicly licked my shoes (metaphoricaly speaking) and grovelled at my brilliance today in class. Its about the Titanic, sorry if its kinda long: We had boarded the great ship, the ‘Titanic’ at around eight of the clock in the evening on Wednesday the tenth of April. The sun almost completely dipped beneath the watery horizon, a warped oval in the sea that glistened like a ruby looking-glass. Mother urged me to hold onto my hat, insistent that if I let go for even a minute, the Atlantic air would blow it right off my head and into the sea! I gripped the edges of the little boat in my gloved hands. What a fine feeling it was, to be back on the sea at last! Many a woman never crosses it, or even looks upon its majestic beauty. It is a great velvet curtain that ripples in the wind and laps on the sandy shores of our beautiful French coast, maybe having travelled from a far away, exciting land where the sun shines bright, happy as it does on our homeland. Tiny waves caressed the sides of the boat, washing it with such harmless care. “Blanche, careful you do not fall in now,” he warned in his rich, dark voice. He only put half his heart into it, while he stared into Mother’s eyes. Her head was outlined against the sunset, a bloody halo in a gruesome portrait where the only angel was Mother’s perfect face. Her blonde ringlets twisted like tiny bleached vines next to her pale face, lips like roses above her dainty chin and pretty nose, dusted with a few warm freckles. Her eyes were almost a whole new part of her face, they were so gorgeous. Deep pools of emeralds rose up above her cheekbones and rested under curving eyelashes, flecks of gold rimming coal-black centre. Apparently I look much like Mother, though I see little resemblance myself. Before us, the ship loomed up above. Lights blared like tiny beacons through the perfectly circular portholes, and four massive chimneys belched smoke into the sunset. I did not gasp, like so many others did, it was merely another passenger liner to take us all to New York. What should be so special about this one? I had been told it was the biggest ship constructed by human hands. A strange image appeared in my mind of tiny men, flies in comparison to the huge bulk of the ‘Titanic’, darting between the bow and the stern, streaks of colour in their wake. Its ungainly, hulking form almost spoiled the beautiful ocean around it. Our little boat was hauled up from the sea on huge ropes, thick as snakes. Dusk had set in, and we were the first boat to come up. It must have been quite a hassle to fetch the others from the water. Mother, Father and I stood in a small huddle near the wooden deckchairs. A uniformed steward came over to show us to our rooms. “This way, please sir,” he said in a crisp English accent, and beckoned for us to follow. “Your luggage should have already arrived in your rooms.” Inside, the smell of paint was acrid. Cigarette smoke tinted the air with a tangy dullness. Salt stung my unaccustomed nose. We were lead down a crisp white passageway, moderately unimpressive, to a lower deck. On the way, I was informed that I would stay in a separate room to my parents, but with a door leading to their room should anything unfortunate happen. I realized we must be in a staff corridor, a quicker route to the rooms. The steward pushed open a door and held it for us. Before us lay the Grand Staircase. Its polished wood was a sheet of glass that could not be seen through, and its great glass dome was like a bubble streaked with gold, stars shining through the inky night sky. Intricate carvings separated the glistening banisters from the stairs, carved cherubs waited in welcoming stillness at the foot of the stairway. We walked through a rabbit’s warren of polished passages, past delicate doors and over resplendent rugs. It was much like our house in France. At last, we came to our room doors. Our baggage was already sitting neatly in the corner, unpacked by the hired maids and hung up in the wardrobes. * The next evening, Father deemed it appropriate that we should dine with the other First Class passengers. I wore an elegant dress of blue silk, the precise shade of the night sky on the tenth of April. The sleeves came to just below my elbows, and Mother insisted I wear gloves, a tiny pair of lacy little things that snagged on my nails. A maid pinned my hair up, it being as brown and as thick as a chestnut, and pinned my hat on over the top. It was truly an amazing hat, deep blue with an indigo feather fastened to the brim. Father wore his best suit, and Mother her favourite dress. We made our way to the Café Parisien. The walls were latticed wood painted in snowy white, all around the room tables and chairs lurked like waiting predators. Windows displayed the outside ocean like fine art. The plates more

i have recently brought a new house and my daughter wants to have a zebra striped and hot pink bed and rug but what colour wall paper or paint would match this ? we don't want room just to be plain pink more

Voting Question: Room Re-decorating Advice?

Basically, my room right now is lilac and bright pink 'cause i used to like those colours, but yeah, not anymore. My room is quite big, it's got a large bay window 'cause the house is Victorian so that takes up pretty much all of that wall but there are slivers of wall to the sides of it. My original idea was to paint the two larger walls a deepish blue or turquoise then have the window wall be painted black and the wall opposite it (a wall with a fireplace) black as well, if you get it? I'm more undecided now though 'cause black will make it quite dark and also i really wanted some form of mural of a nebula or galaxy. That sounds pretty ambitious 'cause i'd never find a huge poster of a nebula right? So i was gonna' paint it but then that would take ages. So now my idea is to paint the ceiling black, then flick some white paint all over it as an attempt to make it resemble stars, but then how would i paint the walls? That would be too much black to have my original idea of two walls plus now the ceiling all black? Any suggestions as to what you think i could do would be appreciated. more

Resolved Question: POLL: What do you think of this book idea? HELP!?

This is an idea me and my mates came up with for a book but better as a movie! You all know the song: Polly had a Dolly who was sick sick sick etc. Well, what if there was a movie/book about a girl called Polly who had a Dolly that was alive. But Dolly didn't act alive when Polly was there. There's more to it......so here's what I've written so far.....hope you like it! PLEASE TAKE THE TIME TO READ IT!!!! x Polly had a Dolly There was once a school called Mableetun. In that school was a year group called Year 7. In that Year 7 group was a tutor group called 7T1. In that tutor group were a gang of girls. And in that gang of girls were Polly, Holly, and Molly. Polly, Holly, and Molly were the best of friends. Polly had long and curly hair which was blond. Holly had dark brown hair with a fringe. And Molly had medium-long hair which was blond. To tell the story short, the girls had had a sleepover. They were playing when Holly thought of a great idea, to make a doll for Polly. They all thought it was a brilliant idea because of the song: Polly had a dolly who was sick sick sick. And that’s where this story begins. . . . When Polly went to bed on Sunday night, she kissed her new dolly goodnight and placed her on the window seal. That’s where all her other toys were, all sat on the window seal. After that, she quickly dozed off to sleep, as normal. But she woke up in the night. She turned over to look at her clock on her bedside table, 3.42 AM. And when she turned back over, BANG, right in her face, there was Dolly. Wide-eyed led on her pillow. Her eyes fixed to Polly’s. Dolly’s cheeks had painted round red blobs on but her actual face a white. Pure white, like a ghost. Polly’s bones shivered and goosebumps popped up on her skin. She had a cold spark down her spine. “Dolly? But I put you on the window seal! How-?” Polly exclaimed. Dolly’s eyes were wide and her head was tilted. She was silent. But the way she looked, she way her eyes focused on Polly so tightly was like she was alive. Like she could talk to her right then and now. But how could she – she was a dolly! So, Polly got up and put her back on the window seal. But when Polly had picked her up, she didn’t feel soft. Dolly felt warm and hard, but that couldn’t have been possible, she was stuffed. Just again, like she was alive. Polly got into bed after, thinking it was a prank. A very good prank. The next morning, Polly had just woken up. It was 7.34 AM; she got out of bed and stretched. A few quick yawns and she was in front of her window seal. She looked out of the window, the fresh grass swaying in the light breeze and the trees spraying moisture off the branches. Then she looked down at her toy crowd. Dolly stood out the most. But she picked up teddy and held him in her arms, then skipped out of the room and down the stairs. Polly entered the kitchen, and placed teddy (facing her) on the table next to the wall. She turned around to get a cup and fill it up with some juice. Then when she spun back around to drink it on the table, there was Dolly. Sat there, wide-eyed staring at Polly, with no expression showing. Dolly was sat where Teddy had been. “Where’s Teddy? Dolly, where’s Teddy? And how-?” Polly breathed. Then Polly caught sight of Teddy on the floor, his stuffing was everywhere and he had a big rip down the front of him. It looked like a lion had attacked him. “TEDDY!” Polly cried, picking him up and hugging the remains. She looked at Dolly who hadn’t moved. She was staring at her with her big, black holes as eyes and her head tilted, like in the night but she had a smile on her face. Polly swore that her mouth was closed in the night. “You must be upset as well, I’m sorry Dolly. I’ll find the devil that did this. Here’s your favourite song to make you feel better, Polly had a Dolly who was sick sick sick, she called the doctor to come quick quick quick!” Polly smiled and ran to show her Mum Teddy. “Dolly had a Teddy who is dead dead dead .” Dolly sung in a deathly voice. Polly’s Mum had agreed to take her to the sowing shop down the road to get Teddy all sown up tomorrow. And so, for the night, Polly lightly put celotape around Teddy’s rip to keep the stuffing in and slept with him in her bed. The weirdest thing was, was that when Polly woke up, Teddy wasn’t there. “MUM !” Polly screamed. She was getting frustrated now. EVERYTHING was going wrong. “What Polly, what!” her Mum panted, she had just sprinted up the stairs. “Where’s Teddy, you said you’d take him to the shop in the afternoon!” Polly complained. “I still am.” Mum replied. “So, if you didn’t take it to the shop early, then where is he?” Polly cried. “Well, your Father has been in bed all night and still is, so he couldn’t have taken it!” Mum explained. “That’s impossible; we are the only people that have been in this house all night.” Polly replied, getting confused “Itcould have been our cat?!” “Oh perlease Polly, we don’t have a cat.” Mum laughed. “Then who took TEDDY!” Polly screamed. “Polly, don’t shout!” Mum ordered “This is so silly, you know, everything has been going wrong with your toys since Dolly has arrived.” Then she laughed “How funny!” But Polly wasn’t laughing, she was right. “That’s it! The doll!” Polly jumped up and down. “You’re the one being silly now, first the cat – which we don’t even have! And now this? I mean she stuffed,” Mum picked her up and flung her about in her hand “She can’t talk, walk or move so how could she ever do something like this! It’s insane, Polly, it really is.” “Mum!” Polly said, grabbing Dolly off of her “You shouldn’t have said that, now she’s going to get you.” Her Mum laughed and Polly stretched out her arm and held Dolly up to her Mum’s face, with the back of Dolly facing herself. “Naughty Mummy!” Polly said in a girly voice, but her Mum’s face went pale. “It’s only a joke, Mum! ------MumShe just stood there, like a dead statue. Polly lowered Dolly from her Mother’s face and threw her back onto the pile of toys on the window seal. Then she shook her Mum to try and knock some sense back into her. But still she was silent. “I need to go and lye down.” Her Mum said in one croaky tone and left the room without another word. Polly poked her head round the door and heard her Mum mutter to her Dad; “She smiled at me.” more

Resolved Question: Decorating my room. Opinions please!?

My old room was painted lilac and I had a lime green carpet. (It looks nicer than it sounds...) I'm moving house and I'm thinking about painting my walls a really bright yellow. Everything else in the room (furniture etc) will be bright pink, orange and purple. Just imagine it. A yellow wall, with pink cube shelves dotted around... Pink curtains, windowsill and skirting boards...pink desk, tv and games console.... With a few things orange & purple, like handles on desk drawers..... pink duvet, with orange sheets.... you get the idea... I really like bright colours and I believe it'll work and look rather funky. But no one else seems to think so! What do you think?I should mention that I'm 20years old.... Are bright colours childish? :( I just think they're lively, like me! more

Resolved Question: MOVING HOUSE?? URGENT!!?

I'm a thirteen-year old girl and because the housing market is all over the place my family is going to rent a house which is closer to where my friends are and my school. I have the choice between two rooms. Which ever one I do get though my parents will have the other. I'm not sure which room I want. The first room is on the back of the house and about the size of my room at the moment. My mum said that she could paint it, get a carpet and curtains in the colour of my choice. I wouldn't have room to have all of my stuff in but I would have enough room to hang out with my friends in. It doesn't have any fitted furniture in it The second room is on the front of the house and it's twice the size of the first room. I wouldn't be able to paint the walls or change the carpet but I would have curtains and rugs. The walls and carpet are beiche at the moment. It has a dressing table which would double up as a desk and a wall of fitted wardrobes which I would have to share. There is a wall papered yellow wall which I hate but my parents said that if I chose the second room I would be able to cover it with a lilac net or something. I spend lots of time in my room so it needs to be a nice enviroment. My friends are round a lot and if they stayed I would go downstairs with them in the sitting room because I have 3 chair beds for us. Which room do you think would suit me better? Which room do you think I should choose? Thanks in advance, Lucy xxx more

Resolved Question: repairing a brick wall?

I'm about to paint to front wall of my house bit needs minor repairs first. The general condition of the wall is good but there are a few areas where bits have broken off. Would I be best filling these with good old mortar or something ready made from B&Q? Thanks more

Resolved Question: Anybody know where or how can i make one complain about house conditions?

My family and I, for almost 2 years we used to live in one house with very bad conditions. The mould is the whole house and the agents just ignore what is happening. We all get sick, my husband, my 2 small sons and i. The doctor write to us one letter explain about our situation and how really sick we were. Now I do have the letter and we have to move out, because anybody could be not live in so much damp. But the house is again in the market to rent, they do nothing about it, just paint the walls cheating people. And i don't know where to complain or aware the people the house have no conditions to live in. Please anyone know what should I do? more

Resolved Question: DIY advice needed from builders?

I removed stone cladding from the front of my house. It's taken a year to get all the adhesive (mortar) off the brickwork but is *finally* reaching the stage where I can think about painting it. Oh happy days! My question is: Do I need to treat the brickwork before painting it? I'm aware that brick sealant (the type you can get in B&Q for about £10) can prevent the wall from 'breathing' and expelling moisture. My only worry is that these bricks have been chiseled, angle-ground, hammered and scraped to oblivion so have no protective 'glaze' left on them. Will exterior paint be enough to protect them from the weather or is it worth coating them in sealant too? Many thanks more

Resolved Question: Can my landlord claim my carpets as fixtures and fittings?

I've just heard that my landlord's assistant has secretly warned my mum (another tenant of his who is also giving notice) that he want's to keep my carpets and rosewood flooring when I leave, using the fixtures and fitting's rule (anything fixed by the tenant becomes part of the property according to his tenancy agreement) When I moved in almost 3 years ago, there were only dirty bare floorboards and plasterboard walls. There weren't even any lightbulbs. It's a 5 bed, 6 bathroom house and has cost over £5000 to carpet and cushion floor and a further £2000+ on putting down real rosewood flooring. None is fixed, except gripper rods holding the carpet down. The painting and other decorating alone has cost more money than I could count. Can my landlord get away with this? I'll be contacting the citizen's advice on a number of other issues with him anyway but I was just curious on what everyone here thinks. I'm in the UK by the way.Just to reiterate. NONE of my flooring or carpeting is fixed. I can take it up when ever I want. I am asking whether my landlord can demand by law that I leave it. The real wood flooring sits on top of the floorboards, not instead of. The only thing attached by any means is the carpet gripper rods around the edges of the room. (don't know what they're called in the US but they're practically worthless, they just hold the carpet to the sides of the room)Real wood or laminate flooring (uk understanding) is planks of wood laid on top of the floorboards like a carpet would lay. Apologies for the confusion. I didn't remodel or rebuild his house, I just painted the walls, laid my carpets and wood, and made it nicer for me living there. N.B. Many gripper rods were already there and there were clear marks that ones had been there in the past, so hopefully, I don't think he could use that excuse. more

Resolved Question: What colour tiles and walls with a creamy beige bathroom suite?

We have just moved into a house and the bathroom suite needs replaceing for a white one (we can afford to do this for a few years so i want to decorate the walls etc just to make it look a bit nicer/bareable!) The suite is a creamy beige colour. I want to paint the tiles and walls but dont know what colour will go? Ideally I thought white would be easiest for the tiles as then I dont have to paint the grout in, what do you think? and what colour walls? Thanks more

Resolved Question: What is the best paint for my walls?

OK, I'm planning to rip all the wallpaper of my house (one room at a time!) and then paint the walls. I chose to start with the main hall and stairway walls. The problem with this area is that often people don't use the hand-rail to go upstairs, and use the wall as a hand-rail / impulse giver (specially small kids!). I wanted to know if there is any kind of special paint that does not get dirty when touched. It would be perfect if you could tell me the proper name of the paint type and why this paint doesn't retain any dirt. 10 points for the best answer! Thanks! more

Resolved Question: Why Is It That When...?

... we hear see and read about a murder or shooting committed in Ireland that the perpetrators seem to be arrested and originate from council estate block housing? Could it be that these violent armed men are simply bored unemployed unskilled and blaming others for their own problems. Look at the murals the flags and the images, they are always painted on walls in council estates. more

Resolved Question: A 13 year old girls room?

At last I have finally finished my designs! :) I'd love to hear what you think of them :) All walls are white. On one wall, there will be lots of polka dots in these colours: -Aqua blue -Hot pink -Sun yellow -Bright orange There will be a white single bed with lots of cute fluffy heart cushions. Chunky white photo frames of me and friends. A Henry Clarke print of a Vogue model: http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3280/2388876834_81b9b34021_o.jpg Dark oak floorboards A white stand alone mirror This mirror aswell: http://cache.wists.com/thumbnails/8/5f/85fbadec5fab661a499da7f54f95e634-orig A white dressing table from Ikea A fluffy heart rug -As the house is a 400 year old cottage, it has beams by the window and one sloped wall, so I will make the beams look edgy and stand out by painting them in a bold black and use bright orange curtains. Draped over the bed, I will have lots of fairy lights to make it look cute. Also, a white or glass side table and a hot pink lamp. As a celing light, I will go for something aqua blue to match one of the polka dots :) This clock: http://www.aspace.co.uk/product_catalogue/4945/index.html and at the head of the single bed, the letters MJB (my initials) in these letters: http://www.aspace.co.uk/product_catalogue/4630/index.html and a cute beanbag chair in the corner with magazine holders etc :) Sound good to you? more

Resolved Question: Exterior wall re-decoration?

I want to re-decorate the front of my 1930's built mid-terrace house. The bottom half is exposed brick which now looks old and the mortar is crumbling. The top half is plastered and painted, but the paint is now old, peeling, and showing cracks in the wall. I would like advice/suggestions regarding what finish to go for - pebble dash, rendering, just paint etc? I don't no much about exterior finish, but would prefer a finish that would be durable, insulating , weather proof and won't put buyers off when I come to sell in future. I reside in the UK. Thanks more
